Homework for Tuesday, Jan 26

Hey, guys! I guess this is a great opportunity to share some of my favorite ads:

Now, take a moment to think about ads in general. Do they annoy you or do you enjoy them? Does it depend on the type of media? Are they manipulative? Could they be an art form? What aspects of advertising do you like or dislike?

Open Letter from OK Go

Hi Everyone,

Here is an open letter that covers a lot of what we've been discussing with regards to large labels controlling access to music and music sharing. Not required reading, just interesting reading.

I've also embedded the video here:

Part I:

To prepare for the Music Presentation class on Tuesday, we would like each of you listen to the following clips:

Please listen to the following song:

and listen to this: (just the first minute is fine)

Comments, thoughts? Feel free to explore more variations you can find on youtube (but it's not required by any means).

Part II:

Please note (no pun intended) five different areas in which you encounter music in your daily life
Notice your physical location, what you were doing, and whether the music was live or recorded.
Be prepared to discuss these in-class.

Enjoy your weekend!

Homework for The Treble Cliff class of Thursday, January 14th

Hello classmates,

So your homework is as follows. Watch the following video. We're only interested in the music playing:

Now watch this one. Again, our only interest is the music:

Now think about the following questions:

1. If you were one of the songwriters of the first song (Roy Orbison and Bill Dees), how would you feel about your song being used like that in the second one? Do you feel like your "rights" (whatever common meaning you take from that term) have been violated somehow?

2. 2 Live Crew sold over 2 million copies of the second song and made a lot of money. As the songwriter of the original, do you feel you are owed a piece of that pie?

That's it! We'll see you in class Thursday,
